Yahoo! Autos entered a business relationship with AutoTrader to add their used car listings to our own offering. The project was a huge design challenge: AutoTrader offered many merchandising tiers to dealers for including their listings. Past usability research comparing Autos Used Cars to other sites had shown that Autos' existing columnar layout was the easiest for users to scan listings and we did not want to move away from that.
I iterated on designs to find one that presented all of the merchandising requirements while maintaining the best user experience. Months after our product launch, AutoTrader redesigned their own listings to a very similar layout.
